TOOLS

the context

Crafting an engaging investing education app to teach teenagers essential financial skills to last a lifetime✨

It's widely acknowledged that the sooner you start investing, the better. However, how many of our youth are genuinely well-versed in the art of investing? The number is shockingly low.
the problem

Nearly half of Gen Z is turning to social media for investing advice despite ranking as one of the least trustworthy sources.

Young adults continue to grapple with challenges in financial management, turning to unreliable sources like TikTok, Instagram and Reddit.

Personally, I struggled financially because I lacked a mentor at home, received no guidance in school, and found online resources overwhelming and conflicting.

These shared struggles prompted each member of our team to embark on a research journey.

the research
Majority of users lack the confidence and knowledge in investing.
5 young adults and 22 more were surveyed to assess the user’s motivations and feelings towards investing. This coupled with the data from Greenlight’s Survey insights of 1,029 respondents in the U.S. ages 13-20 to really understand the user & build persona’s based on this.
“It was always so overwhelming and I still barely know anything about it”

“There’s lot of fear. I still don't feel like I'm super knowledgeable about investing”

What Does the Research Tells Us?

1. There is an overwhelming amount of information that becomes intimidating.

2. Young people are scared and confused when it comes to investing.

3. Schools are not providing inept education on investing.

Based on the data collected, Nick Young was created to further understand and empathize with our users.

testing round 1
5 User interviews were conducted with lofi clickable prototypes.

of users were able to navigate to different subjects from homepage.

Iteration 1

The game-map of user's main subject (Real Estate) began as the homepage but after testing, the "select subject" reverted to homepage.

of users were able to follow through module 1 with no issues.

Iteration 1

Iteration 2

Users reported a need for back button.

testing round 2

3 Major Improvements
After each round of user testing  the prototype underwent a number of changes with the consideration of user comments. The following are the most principle improvements:

Game Flow

Each subject has an associated game map. User's reported a preference to flow from subject to the game map, rather than vice-versa.

Tutorial

Users struggled navigating without instruction. Therefore a simple tutorial section was added to guide users.

Progress Bar

Upon feedback users enjoyed tracking their progress but wanted to view their progress at the quiz section separate from the learning.
