TOOLS

the context

Redesigning Chess.com to provide a user-centric experience and modernize visual design of the platform✨

My roommate taught me how to play chess a few years ago and when I was finally ready to lose against other players, I started using chess.com. 3 years later and I'm still an avid chess player, but I noticed different elements that could be improved as a designer. So when I came by their redesign contest in 2021 I felt inspired to give it a shot!
the introduction
What is Chess.com?
Chess.com provides more than just games; it offers puzzles, lessons, articles, and videos about chess. Users can play against friends or random opponents worldwide and join tournaments. The platform also fosters a community where players can interact and join clubs.

the research
The complex navigation and outdated UI frustrate users and stops them from exploring the different features the website has to offer.
5 avid chess.com users were interviewed to understand their most visited features and motivations when using the platform. Important insights were organized into cards and the team collaborated to divide the information common groups to assess user needs.

What does the research tell us to do?

1. Place prominent CTA's on landing page.

2. Divide the navigation into 3 categories Play, Learn & Social.

3. Modernize and update the style guide.

CARD SORTING
Organizing the info into 3 featured categories: Play. Learn. Share.

wireframing
After defining the problem and redesign goals I worked on lofi wireframes.
It was important to include the main CTA's on landing page to improve efficiency and reduce confusion for new users!
